I Am A Proud Community Organizer

I rarely stand on my soapbox, but I feel that right now I need to. So, listen if you will.

At our weekly $1 margarita Monday outing, options for Halloween costumes were discussed. My top pick right now is to dress as Sarah Palin. I said so.

[Sidenote: I plan on putting a spin on the costume carrying an "I am a Proud Community Organizer" sign and sporting a Barack Obama pin. Along with some other twists, but you'll have to wait and see.]

Not once but TWICE did someone ask me "Who is Sarah Palin?"

Seriously?! Only one of two people running for Vice President of our COUNTRY. Now, my group of friends is rather diverse. Different ages, races, both men and women. Educated, smart, well-spoken people. I was stunned.

I rarely discuss politics with friends. In fact, my best friend and I were in the beginnings of a heated discussion when her husband stepped in. I don't want to have to argue or possibly ruin a friendship over differing political views.

BUT I will say this: It is SO IMPORTANT TO VOTE. Know who's running. KNOW THE FACTS (don't always believe what you see in commercials). If you can't follow all of the issues, choose a few close to your heart and find out where each candidate stands.

Our country is in need of a leader, one who will make changes to our dwindling economy. This election will effect every American's life. Democrat or Republican. Man or woman. EVERYONE. So please vote and let your voice be heard. And don't give me "My one vote isn't going to make a difference." Because you know what? There are thousands of people saying that. And all of those votes really COULD make or break this election.

So, are you registered? If you are, do you know if you're registered under the right address? Please make sure that you can participate in the election! (Find your state's deadline here)

Vote for change. Obama for America.

....Just sayin'. /soapbox rant

On a lighter note, any other Halloween costume ideas?

Not getting into the political aspects, but I'm totally rocking the flapper dress this year! Can't wait :)

Not going into the sides, but yes...it is VERY important to vote.

Hmm, I don't even know what I'm going to be. Lol.

Amen to that. Vote!

I don't dress up for Halloween, but my son is going to be Optimus Prime.

You know what really irks me?

That people get their opinions soley from email forwards and campaign commercials.

It floors me that their ads can be untrue - yet are STILL ALLOWED TO AIR.

Shouldn't there we some sort of standards or fact check?

Nope. There isn't, yet thousands of people don't take the time to watch debates, peruse websites, or read articles.

Argh. And I was just getting over my political angriness, too! :) Haha.

You rock.

Seriously, it's so important that people educate themselves before they vote. Thanks for pointing that out.

Um, that people don't know who she is is simply ridiculous. Also, I feel strongly that everyone - EVERYONE! - should know what a hanging chad is. It's just part of general knowledge!

Seriously? Palin was on the cover of People AND Us Weekly (even if you don't follow politics most people would have seen her there?). Anyway, I'm with you on the voting thing. In fact, there's a good FREE download out today about voting by Michael Moore go to

www.slackeruprising.com

It makes me wish (again!) that I was American so I could vote!

holy crap. even if you NEVER watch the news, read the news or listen to the news - I am not sure how you can escape knowing who Sarah Palin is. I am in total awe.

i have an amusing editorial to share with you - not here - as to not start a political battle!

Holy crap, how can you live without at least hearing a news headline now and then?

The bf and I are going to be Capt. Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth but I'm pretty sure I'm not going to get my Elizabeth costume done in time. We'll probably end up just grabbing one of our old costumes.

I want to pretend that I'm shocked that some folks didn't know who Sarah Palin was... buuuut.. this IS America and I'm totally not.

Playboy bunny! ;)

I totally agree with you - it is our duty to be educated about our choices and vote, but doesn't it scare you that someone like that could vote?

Annie said...

Yes! My boyfriend and I are seriously considering going as McCain/Palin.

As someone above mentioned, it drives me nuts that people make their choices based on e-mail forwards. What's worse is that BOTH parties are continually taking clips out of context and using them as ammunition. It's insulting to the American voting public. But, then again, as long as people are refusing to take the time to make an educated decision... well, I see why they both do it.

Wow - that is pretty crazy. I wasn't huge into politics and even I knew who she was way back when. And I recently wrote a post about how much she scares me. But, on another note, I am so glad that people our age group feel the same about voting. I think it's SO ridiculously important and am glad that people are urging others to go vote!

Sad that people don't know who Sarah Palin is!

I'm in Ohio too and just found your blog. I just got power back on Saturday. Almost a whole week! Ugh! Glad yours is back too.

I agree it's important to know the facts. That's part of the reason I'm running my 2008 Election Series. To help sort out the facts for myself. And to share what I learn with others.

Holy cow. That is really why America scares me nowadays. No wonder our country is crumbling! I have a lot of thoughts on Sarah Palin, but I think I'll keep them to myself :)

Not going to say anything about Obama but I will say that voting is important. Go out and vote!

Political preferences aside, how did they not know who she is???

Halloween is my fave holiday! And I still don't even know what I want to be this year :( Thought of being a pussycat doll (I know, I know), but that's scratched. Love your idea! I also love that you wrote this post and reminded me that there are other people out there who understand the utter importance of this election. how do you live and breathe and not know who Palin is?

Larissa said...

Any form of media, even pop stuff like People and Extra, have been talking about Palin. Seriously, those people really didn't know?! Bizarre.

awesome idea for Halloween.

I still can't think of anyone to go as. I've been monica lewinsky like 5 times so I think that's a little played out.

I'm registered. I'll be voting.

But I have to admit I'm a teeny bit nostalgic for the days when I had no idea who Sarah Palin was...the campaign was interesting before her selection; now it's all about pigs, dead moose, and botched interviews with Katie Couric.
