The Blizzard of '08

At least that's what everyone else has been calling it. Seeing that I lived most of my life in a city by the lake (one of the Great Lakes that is), I know snow. I have seen snow fall by the foot. I have gotten stuck in it. Shoveled it. Built forts in it. Eaten a face full of it. So, snow and I? Yeah, we're like this *crosses index and middle fingers*. But to my great satisfaction, when I moved to Central Ohio I had escaped the dreaded lake effect snowfall... or so I thought.

I spent Friday night relaxing with Clancy, having breakfast for dinner and other extraordinary things. Planning on getting up at the ass crack of dawn to see him off to work and head back home, I had failed to bring any getting ready essentials. Little did I know I would need them because Columbus was in for its RECORD SETTING snowfall in the history of the city. Yes, like the most snow they've ever seen. EVER.

That's a "13" on the tape measure if you can't see it.

What exactly does a Saturday filled with 13+" of snow* bring, you ask? No work for Clancy, a (willingly) stranded girlfriend and a day with nothing to do and nowhere to go. The city shut down. Closed malls, closed roads, a level 2 snow emergency, and only one pizza place open for delivery (tragedy I tell you!). Trivial Pursuit pop culture was played, movies were watched, faces were stuffed. We had a blast. Who knew catching cabin fever wasn't so bad after all? To quote my friend Brad Paisley:

It was time well wasted
And there's no way I'd trade a few more things that I could've crossed off my list
For a day I'll never forget
No, I didn't get a thing done
But I sure soaked up every minute of the memory we were makin'
And I count it all as time well wasted

Did you think there wouldn't be pictures? Silly freaders :)

We obviously weren't going anywhere.

I love how the snow makes a wave-like shape on the porch rails.

Since she's part husky, Zoey is right at home in the snow.

Gracie... not so much. Let her outside to do her business, she saw the snow and turned right back around and stood shivering by the door. But I showed her that snow can be fun - sort of.

The concrete bench out in the backyard.

Obviously I wasn't able to make it up to visit my grandma, but thank you all for keeping her in your thoughts. Crossing my fingers for good weather next weekend.

*The weather officials are saying it was actually closer to 20", so with all the wind blowing we had a less than accurate reading with the tape measure. So, sue us.

Wow... that's more snow than I've ever seen in person in my life. A day off with nothing to do sounds amazing :)

And I have a half Huskey named Zoe :) I'd be willing to bet they'd be friends.

Looks like my world.

Seriously!? I'm from Canada (also known as the country that has two seasons 'snow season and 'more snow season' and those pictures are far worse than anything we've had all winter.

I hope you have some cute winter boots! (And I hope Clancy loves to shovel).

Yours and Rachels (pure interest) pics are spinning me out.

just. amazing!! (we don't have snow lol, or in the parts we do, it barely counts)

We also got slammed with snow. (Kind of an obvious statement since I live in NE Ohio.) They had a driving ban on the entire county, which I can't recall them ever putting into place. I saw a 4x4 drive down the street, and families going to the gas station to pick up essentials for the evening. Thank goodness it didn't snow on Sunday like they originally predicted.

I love days in like that. At least you had the excuse of a snow storm! I usually don't! Ha!

Phew! That's a lot of snow. For once this year we managed to escape it. But at least you had the day off of work, right?

Also, I LOVE breakfast for dinner.

Wow!! That's a lot of snow - I'm so thankful I live in the south, and I don't EVER see snow like that!

great lakes state here... we've gotten positively slammed this year. i think we had already 75 inches for the winter. If I never see another snowflake in my life, I'll die happy.

SNOW! You have no idea how envious I am!

That reminds me of the few years I spent in Milwaukee, bbrrrr, and the reason I now live in the south!

Wow. I thought St. Louis was bad when we got 10-14 (depending on where you were in the area) inches of snow. Nice thing about March snow? It disappears pretty quickly. But really, I do think I have a touch of Seasonal Pissed Off Disorder!

What a bummer! I'm done with winter but luckily we haven't been hit too, too hard on the east coast (knock on wood).

Wow, that's a lot of snow. And now I remember why I live in the mid-Atlantic. We got basically 1" of snow all winter. Although I suppose technically we aren't out of the woods yet.

I'm glad you made the most of your snowed in situation!

I should have taken pictures of my snowfall for you, because you'd be amazed. It was so high that I HAD to shovel so the bitty little pups could go outside.

(Spring yet?)

Oh man I heard about all the snow, it's crazy!! I sort of miss it, but at the same time didn't mind wearing shorts and flip flops all weekend long :)

Wow! I'm wearing jeans and a tank top. Don't hate me.

I wish it got that cold where I live, it looks beautiful!

Freshly fallen snow is so beautiful! But I'm such a southern girl at heart--I hope I never have to live anywhere that snow is a regular winter occurrence!!

I hate snow!!! I'm so sorry you had to endure another snow storm. I feel for you!

Here in New York, we got inches and inches of rain. Crazy downpoury rain. If it had been 10 degrees colder, we would have been buried as well. Great pictures!

Forced snow days are kind of lovely at times-- particularly when they mean no work on weekends!

I am soo snowed out. If I see another flurry I am going to go insane.

I spend 4 hours stuck on the highway last week because of the snow, I am ready for summer.

Haha, on a positive note, I am glad you had a good day at home!

Wow!!! The cocker spaniel in the snow is so cute... and reminds me of my childhood dog.

I haven't seen snow like that in SO long. Especially since it's been like 72 and gorgeous here the past few weeks... ;)

i totally feel for you!! Snow sucks, at least we lost an hour this weekend so it'll stay a little brighter out each day!

that's some craziness! It snowed here too it's quite pitiful actually.

I like snow but hate being outside in it. Funnily enough, we don't actually get a lot of it in central Scotland. It rarely lies. Don't remember doing it for more than a day since about 1996. "The Day After Tomorrow" has a lot to answer for . . . Sounds like you had a nice day in all the same.

brrr just looking at that, good luck, stay warm!

If there's gonna be snow, there should be cuddling and cute dogs and pizza. Happy blizzard :)

I love blizzards! I am a Colorado girl at heart, I grew up with them. I'm glad you two lovebirds were at least stranded together :)

Megan said...

Oh, that looks...overwhelmingly cold. I feel like a state-xenophobe, but really? It was over 70 degrees and sunny yesterday in CA. The joke's on me, however, because it's a constant 58 degrees in my office.

Lisa said...

Totally jealous. I'd dive into that.

Gracie looks thrilled in this photo.

I grew up in CBus suburbs and I've moved progressively further south...I have to admit, it's only snowed once here this winter and I don't miss cold snowy mornings! I do miss snowmen, snowball fights and fires! Not to mention Rx Mojo and Easton!

Me and snow? We're not friends.
