Move Over Ebert & Roeper

I have seen some great movies in the theater recently and wanted to share with you guys why I loved them. These are definitely two must sees. 4 stars all around.

P.S. I Love You - First of all, bring tissues! Seriously. I cried at different points throughout the movie. I don't think there was a dry eye in the place. The main character, Holly, loses the love of her life to brain cancer after nine years of marriage. Her husband wrote letters while he was alive to be delivered to her after he's gone, the first one came on her 30th birthday. Each letter gives her encouragement to keep going, to move on with her life. And every one closes with "p.s. I love you". The reason I loved this movie so much was because it really showed the true grief you feel when you lose someone you love. Like Holly's mother said in the movie - whether by their choice or not it still hurts like hell. I could relate to Holly's character at each stage of her journey. In the beginning not wanting to leave the house. The memories. Not being able to get them out of your mind. Popping in a movie or CD and singing along. Then relying on your friends. Needing a shoulder to cry on. Going out, talking to men, but still not being interested. Knowing nothing could compare to what you just lost. At the end of the movie a year had passed since Gerry's death. Holly had found herself, found her career and all around became a stronger person. Not yet ready to find love again, but knowing in time she will. Holly, I only hope that I can find the love you shared with Gerry once in my lifetime. Because if and when I do, I will never let it go.

The movie also increased my desire to visit Ireland 100 fold. What a beautiful, beautiful place. I cannot wait until I can afford to go! If you're still not convinced you should see this movie take one look at Gerry in the movie poster (played by Gerard Butler) and the character of William (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Gorgeous men with accents to boot! Are you drooling yet? For the Grey's Anatomy fans reading, yes that is the same guy who played Denny!

Favorite quote: "I bet you've had a hard time walking into a room full of people on your own, right? Yeah. I know that. I know what it is not to feel like you're in the room until he looks at you or touches your hand or even makes a joke at your expense, just to let everyone know... you're with him. You're his."

Juno - Hilarious movie. You will not stop laughing. Ellen Page, who plays Juno, pulls off the quick wit of her character quite brilliantly. She gets pregnant at 16, plans on having an abortion but can't go through with it. Decides to have the baby and then give the child up for adoption to a deserving couple. The relationship she builds with Jason Bateman's character (the soon-to-be adoptive father) is rather bizarre and the only part of the movie I didn't like. I found their closeness a little unnecessary for the development of the plot. They could have successfully shown the instability of the couple's marriage in other ways besides his growing fondness for a 16-year-old girl. The great thing about this movie for sure are the memorable quotes: "As far as boyfriends go, Paulie Bleeker is totally boss. He is the cheese to my macaroni" and "I'm pregnant. What? Honest to blog?" Classic.

My personal favorite quote was part of the lyrics to the song Paulie and Juno sing to each other at the end of the film. That scene was adorable and really brought to life the love they had for each other, even at 16. "You're a part time lover and a full time friend. The monkey on your back is the latest trend. I don't see what anyone can see, in anyone else. But you."

If you've seen either of these movies tell me your thoughts. Do you agree or disagree? Any other movie recommendations?

Move Over Ebert & Roeper

Over the long holiday weekend, amidst all my "free laboring" (you see, Clancy owns the house and he's not paying me; not in cash at least), I had the time to enjoy several movies. Since I'm sure there are other movie-lovers like me out there in the blogging world, I thought I'd give you my two cents. That way you can update your queue on Blockbuster Online or Netflix, whichever you prefer.

(Sidenote: I used to have Netflix and switched because with Blockbuster you can return your online rentals at any of their locations and exchange them for new movies right away! On top of that as soon as they are scanned into the system your online queue will send you the next movie(s) on your list. Sometimes I have 4 movies at a time even though I'm signed up for the 2-at-a-time plan. Can you tell I'm obsessed?)

Because I Said So was watched sans-Clancy and I have to say I was happy about that. Total chick flick. (Plus there was this scene where Diane Keaton & Mandy Moore's characters talk about how an orgasm feels and I'm sure that would have been an awkward moment for him). Several friends had warned me that Diane Keaton is a hard-to-swallow character in this movie --- and were they ever right! I swear if she was my mother in real life I would have to kill her. To sum up, she places an online personal ad "Mother Seeking Life Partner for Daughter". The guy she finds, although very handsome, totally doesn't get Millie (Mandy Moore). But you'll have to watch it to find out what happens for yourself. I give it 4 Stars. Especially since Piper Perabo was in it. And I LOVE HER.

Fracture definitely has an interesting plot. Anthony Hopkins' character kills his wife, confesses to the murder, but manages to evade conviction. The movie goes through his trial with a plot twist at the end. I don't want to give too much away, but I was disappointed in the way the "twist" was executed. There was no real "climax". They built up and built up this storyline, but didn't release all the tension. It was a let down. I give it 3 stars. Not two and a half like I should, because how could I not enjoy a movie where I got to see this face over and over again? Yummy.

Pathfinder is a total "manly man" film. Rough and tough Vikings vs. the native Indians. It takes place over 1000 years ago pre-Columbus. A little boy was abandoned by his Viking father because he refuses to kill someone. He was taken in and raised at a nearby Indian village. The Vikings return several years later to conquer the land for themselves and Ghost (the now grown-up little boy) is there to defend the Indians. It's basically a Viking Braveheart. Loved it. And I will admit I tried to get out of watching the movie when I saw the cover (However there is a lot of gore. And swordfighting. Consider yourself warned). Huge plus for tying in a little bit of romance when you know girlfriends will be dragged in to watching the film. I give it 4.5 stars.

And lastly...
The Ex is a Blockbuster exclusive. A little cheesy in parts, but since when has Zach Braff not played a cheesy character? He is a GREAT actor in my opinion. Clancy might disagree with that statement after seeing The Last Kiss. But would probably agree with me that he is oh-so-fabulous in Scrubs. Anyways, back to the movie. The young couple moves to Ohio (YAY!) to start over after Zach's character loses his job. He ends up working for his father-in-law at an ad agency along with his wife's handicapped ex-lover. Interesting, right? Right. I give it 3.5 stars. You should definitely watch it, because why would you not want to see cheerleading moves like this one:

Oh Wise Internets (as Libby says) - do you agree with any of my reviews or have any good movie recommendations for a semi-obsessed movie renter like me?

Living Out Our Fantasies

A few days of lounging around in your pjs will without a doubt lead to some movie watching. The bf joined in, convincing me that we need to continue along in the realm of fantasy since we've been watching those lately. Most recently was Neverending Story - which surprisingly I have never seen even though it was a "hit" during my childhood. All I have to say is - FABULOUS. I LOVED it. Does anybody know what the name is that Bastian calls out in the end (the name of his mother)? Clancy has always thought it was Mariah since he was little, but it was really hard to make out. And the Luck dragon's face has a slight resemblance to our cocker spaniel, Gracie. Too funny.

We also watched Jim Henson's movie The Dark Crystal. The puppets/costumes in this movie were the most unique I have ever seen. Some of them were definitely precursors to Fraggle Rock. The Chamberlain character's whining made me laugh out loud several times. It was just so annoying that it was funny. And how cute were Jen & Kira? Long live the Gelflings!

The best part for me was when Jen sees Kira's wings. "Wings? I don't have wings!" Her reply "Of course not, you're a boy!" Girl power :)

If you like the fantasy genre I highly recommend both of these movies for your watching enjoyment. And to be honest, I have never considered myself a fantasy movie-lover before so just watch them!
