Unconventional Problem Solving

Men and women have always been different (i.e. Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus). Not just emotionally, or the way we handle relationships, but in solving every day problems.

Women, how would you go about coring an apple? A knife right? Or maybe you have a handy dandy apple corer that slices too. If so, I'm jealous.

Well, last night, I learned that men are not only unconventional in their problem solving, but also freaking hilarious.

In an attempt to make baked apples, the cores were removed using a power drill.

And I have to admit it worked pretty damn well. But don't tell him I said that ;)

Has your boyfriend/husband ever done anything that really surprised you when it came to solving a problem?

I have neither a boyfriend or a husband, but a girl I know once tried to charge her Nintendo DS by plugging her mobile phone charger into the headphone socket of said DS. Then went on to complain about how long it was taking to charge.

A drill? That is hilarious!

My husband is pretty logical when it comes to solving problems, and hasn't done anything too crazy.

My ex, however, did something classic. One night some candle wax somehow got on the couch. He had picked up a burning candle to look at it, and it dripped. Rather than tell me and have me be upset about it, he decided to solve the problem himself. After I went to sleep, he got out the iron. That might have worked, softening and melting the wax...MAYBE...If he hadn't put the iron on HIGH! I have never ironed anything on high. Apparently a couch gets a huge scorched area when you do that, FYI.

The thought process of men never fails to amaze me. The drill as an apple core is just another example. So simple, so efficient.

My ex used to cut my dog's nails with a Dremel. He also thought it would be a good idea to use said Dremel to polish his glasses. Which then proceeded to crack.

Oh, where do I begin. My boyfriend is the epitome of unconventional problem-solving. Like how he rigged my closet or fixed the broken bathroom tile or turned two desks into a large L-shaped desk. The list goes on. I quite admire his unique skills, though! Because his solutions ALWAYS WORK.

Um, I totally racked my brains really hard for this, but I can't think of anything. He solves a lot of problems but usually in a totally conventional way. Or maybe I just don't realize what the conventions are.

To begin, hilarious and I would have paid to watch. But I'm not so sure the use of a power drill is because he's a man. It sounds more like it was because he's crazy.

I agree with JulyBug :)

since the Ex has been moving back and forth a lot from AZ, he doesn't really have any real furniture down there. So he gets creative with what he uses for TV stands (Stack of phonebooks) and other furniture.

I couldn't live like that, but hey. whatever.

Oooh, that's funny. I'm trying to think if Sweets has solved stuff unconventionally? Not that I can think of, but if something strikes me, I'll be back!

Noah's pretty boring with his problem solving skills. Usually he just looks at me and makes some sort of small animal noise when he's stuck.

Soo...how did the baked apples turn out?

truthfully, i am usuallly the one solving problems in my house. my hubby gets very frustrated very easily with household projects :)

One time i got a sock stuck in my vaccuum cleaner in the hose so i used a clothes hanger to get it out and proceeded to ruin the hose. haha!

That's hysterical. I was raised by my dad so he always had interesting methods of doing things, like hot gluing or stapling the hem of my uniform skirt.

I have an apple slicer! And I love it!

Dan has issues with our one touch can opener. I can't help but laugh every time :)

I love the drill. I never would have thought of that.

I tend to be the unconventional problem solver in my relationship. My boyfriend is just way too logical.

Like ttcmb, I'm the unconventional problem solver. Can't open a can of soup? Or five? Go across the street and buy soup. GDB got a lot of laughs at my unconventional problem solving.

My husband is an engineer so he's usually quite inventive.
This may be TMI, but we had a problem with our headboard banging against the wall when we are, ahem, having sex. On Monday, I noticed that the headboard wasn't banging at all and asked him how he fixed it. He grinned and afterwards showed me the foam "go team go" finger that we got at a football game in the fall. It works great!

oh gross! think about where those drill bits have been!

Lol Oh I love this one – at Halloween my finance carves pumpkins with his drill bits! It’s always totally gory and trying to get the pumpkin out of the bits after is gross, but the showmanship involved is priceless!

The guy who did that? seriously a keeper...cause that's hilarious.

I'm sorry that I don't have anything constructive to offer here. Today my bf IS the problem, and in terms of problem-solving, he could stand to APOLOGIZE, not that that will ever happen, seeing as how he is a MAN and everything.

oh, sorry. /tangent

My husband does that all the time. Once when I was sick I asked him to make me a grilled cheese sandwich. You know, butter, bread, and cheese. Not difficult. He decided to "spice" things up a bit. When I took a bite I asked how old the cheese was. It tasted bad. What did he add? Garlic Powder. A lot of garlic powder. YUCK. It was a sweet gesture but gross. Then he wonders why I don't let him cook often.

Oh my gosh, that is hilarious!!!

And you MUST get the corer/slicer! They're really not that expensive, and oh my heavens, do they make apple eating a DREAM!! :)

A power drill? I hope they didn't taste like sawdust!

Using a drill is just classic!I thought it was cute when my husband taught me to wear sunglasses while chopping onions - that way you don't cry!

Tim has totally done this.

I wish I had proof.

It really does work!

Katelin said...

Haha that is awesome, and very creative. Can't say Matt has done anything too surprising yet though, however I could totally see him use a drill for the apples, haha.

That's hilarious! I reallyyy hope he cleaned it first though :)

Man, I've seen my husband do all sorts of crazy shit around our house. I have no idea how his or any other man's brains run. They are like on the polar opposite or something. 3 trips to a hardware store and a consultation to put in a digital thermomostat? Ha ha ha ... I like the candle wax comment above ... classic man move with the iron scorching the couch...

I have to admit that is kinda clever. Hmmm....do I have any apples around here...

Haha I can totally picture you with a power drill in the kitchen. I'm trying to think if Alex has ever done anything out of left field like that...though he could fix anything (serious, anything) with duct tape.

Knife to core apples? I would've totally used a power drill in the first place ;-)

Yeah. I have testosterone!

I'm SO using my drill next time!

Ummm, its 11:23 here and guess who I just woke up laughing so loud? Yeah, the SO. Its about a power drill I tell him cheerily. He says he's gonna power drill my MacBook if I can't stop things like this. "Fine" I say. And I am now moving to an upstairs bedroom. To read my blogs in peace. And laughter.

That is GREAT!! You have an out-of-the-box thinker. Supposedly, that's a GOOD thing. :)

elysa said...

that is so funny! and I love Vanessa's comment about waking up her guy from laughing

Well I wouldn't say this is funny but pretty freaking amazing. Our speakers busted on our stereo and he actually managed to build us a new one from a plastic bottle. It was something he learned in class. I have to admit..if I get stuck on a deserted island...I'd like my little Mcgyver to be there. :)

AS has used tools-tools in the kitchen more times than I can count! It's a little unconventional, but, hey, it gets the job done!
