There was a movie quotes challenge that spread around the blogosphere a little while ago. I'm not that great with remembering quotes from movies (much less what I ate for breakfast this morning), BUT I do remember the lyrics to my favorite songs. How else can I sing along to them in the car?
SO. I have a new challenge for you. I'm going to list the lyrics of 15 songs I adore. These aren't just any songs. These are songs that were on repeat. A lot. They remind me of good times, and of bad. Of laughing until I cried or just crying. Past and present. Maybe I'll share some of those memories with you - if you guys can guess them all. I'm sneaky like that.
The Rules:
- Fill in the missing blanks to finish the song's lyrics
- No cheating! (i.e. no Google)
- Give the name of the song and the artist who sang it
- Please only give the answer to one song today. I have to look out for my West Coast readers! If they're not all filled in, have another guess tomorrow!
- If the answer is correct, I will fill in the blanks and cross it off the list!
We'll see how this goes. Maybe I'll do more next week. Or put more up later today. I have so many songs that spark memories. Isn't it funny how music does that?
- "But just maybe, like an ukulele Mama made a baby. I really don't mind the practice, because you're my little lady. Lady, lady love me, cause I love to lay here lazy. We could close the curtains pretend like there's no world outside."
Banana Pancakes by Jack Johnson - lfar got the lyrics, tiff got the song title and artist first! - "Life's like a novel with the end ripped out. The edge of a canyon with only one way down. Take what you're given before it's gone. And start holdin' on, keep holdin' on. Cause when push comes to shove you taste what you're made of. You might bend 'til you break cause it's all you can take. On your knees you look up, decide you've had enough."
Stand by Rascal Flatts - GO penelope23! (close Laurie but you didn't fill in the lyrics!) - "She makes the sign of a teaspoon. He makes the sign of a wave. The poor boy changes clothes and puts on after-shave. To compensate for his ordinary shoes."
Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes by Paul Simon - GO Ellen! - "Well you ask me how I made it through and how my mint condition could belong to you. When I'm on the ground I roll through town. I'm a president you don't remember getting kicked around."
Dime by Cake - GO Megan! (I was worried no one knew this one! Thanks for chiming in.) - "My choice is what I choose to do and if I'm causin' no harm, it shouldn't bother you. Your choice is who you choose to be, and if you're causin' no harm, then you're alright with me."
Burn One Down by Ben Harper - GO Katyn! - "Baby when I look at you with your hair fallin' down in your baby blues. Standing there across the room I get so lost in the way you move. It makes me reminisce back ten years ago on a night like this. Teary eyed as you took my hand and I told you that I'd be your man. So many things have come so many things have gone. One thing that's stayed the same is our love's still growing strong. Baby just look at us all this time and we're still in love. Something like this just don't exist between a backwoods boy and a fairytale princess."
Livin' Our Love Song by Jason Michael Carroll - GO Katie! - "I am the fountain of affection. I'm the instrument of joy. And to keep the good times rolling I'm the boy, I'm the boy. You know the world could be our oyster, you just put your trust in me. Cause we'll keep the good times rolling."
When I'm Up by Great Big Sea - GO gnomesque! - "Yours was the first face that I saw. I think I was blind before I met you. Now I don’t know where I am. I don’t know where I’ve been, but I know where I want to go. And so I thought I’d let you know that these things take forever, I especially am slow. But I realize that I need you and I wondered if I could come home."
First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes - GO Jessica Maria! (This song has the best music video - check it out here. - "In a coffee shop. In a city. Which is every coffee shop. In every city. On a day. Which is every day. I pick up a magazine. Which is every magazine. And read a story. Then forgot it. Right away. They say goldfish have no memory. I guess their lives are much like mine."
Little Plastic Castle by Ani DiFranco - GO Ellen. Again ;) - "Father McKenzie writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear. No one comes near. Look at him working. Darning his socks in the night when there's nobody there. What does he care? All the lonely people. Where do they all come from? All the lonely people. Where do they all belong?"
Eleanor Rigby by the Beatles - GO Jess! - "Come out Virginia, don't let me wait. You Catholic girls start much too late. But sooner or later it comes down to fate. I might as well be the one. Well, they showed you a statue, told you to pray. They built you a temple and locked you away. But they never told you the price that you pay. For things that you might have done."
Only the Good Die Young by Billy Joel - GO 3carnations! - "Digging a hole and the walls are caving in. Behind me air's getting thin but I'm trying I'm breathing in. Come find me. It hasn't felt like this before. It hasn't felt like home before you. And I know it's easy to say but it's harder to feel, this way. And I miss you more than I should, than I thought I could. Can't get my mind off of you."
The Fear You Won't Fall by Joshua Radin - GO Ashley! (I love him too!) - "I'm through accepting limits cuz someone says they're so. Some things I cannot change, but 'til I try, I'll never know. Too long I've been afraid of losing love - I guess I have lost. Well, if that's love it comes at much too high a cost."
Defying Gravity from Wicked the musical - GO Lisa (even though you gave a million answers I'll give you credit. haha) - "Strangers waiting, up and down the boulevard. Their shadows searching in the night. Streetlight people, living just to find emotion. Hiding, somewhere in the night."
Don't Stop Believing by Journey - Stephanie got the lyrics, Amanda got the song title and artist - "Before anything came between us you were like my best friend. The one I used to run and talk to when me and my girl was having problems. You used to say it would be okay. Suggest little nice things I should do. And when I go home at night and lay my head down all I seem to think about is you."
You Make Me Wanna by Usher - GO Marriage 101! - "She's the voice I'd love to hear someday when I'm ninety. She's that wooden rocking chair I want rocking right beside me. Everyday that passes I only love her more. Yeah, she's the one that I'd lay down my own life for."
She's Everything by Brad Paisley - GO Blogging Barbie (she gChatted the answer in!) - "My baby he don't talk sweet he ain't got much to say. But he loves me, loves me, loves me. I know that he loves me anyway. And maybe he don't dress fine but i don't really mind. Because every time he pulls me near, I just want to cheer."
Let's Hear it for the Boy by Deniece Williams - GO pessimisticredhead! - "There's gone for good and there's good and gone. And there's gone with a long before it. I wish she'd been just a little more clear. Well there's gone for the day and gone for the night. And gone for the rest of your doggone life."
What Kind of Gone? by Chris Cagle - combined efforts of Tipp and Annie! - "I backed my car into a cop car the other day. Well he just drove off sometimes life's ok. I ran my mouth off a bit too much oh what can I say. Well you just laughed it off it was all ok."
Float On by Modest Mouse - GO Alexa! - "After all that we've been through I will make it up to you. I promise to. And after all that's been said and done. You're just a part of me I can't let go."
Hard to Say I'm Sorry by Chicago - GO Mrs. Twink! - "Gonna let it rock, let it roll. Let the bible belt, come and save my soul. Holdin' on to 16 as long as you can. Changes come around real soon, make us women and men. Oh yeah, life goes on. Long after the thrill of livin' is gone."
Jack and Diane by John Menstral.. I mean Mellencamp. haha GO Each (another gchat answer)! - "Yes, I'm grounded. Got my wings clipped. I'm surrounded by all this pavement. Guess I'll circle while I'm waiting. For my fuse to dry."
Bigger Than My Body by John Mayer - GO Katelin! - "If you smile then that should set the tone. Just be limber. And if you let go the music should move your bones. Just remember, baby."
Like I Love You by Justin Timberlake - GO Susan! - "Cause I’m a son of a 3rd generation farmer. I’ve been married 10 years to a farmer’s daughter. I got 2 boys in the county 4-H. I’m a lifetime sponsor of the F.F.A. Hey! That’s what I make. I make a lotta hay for a little pay."
International Harvester by Craig Morgan - GO pomjob! - "Let them all pass all their dirty remarks. Here is one question I'd really love to ask. Is there a place for the hopeless sinner who has hurt all mankind just to save his own?
One Love by Bob Marley - and since NO ONE answered this one you all should have a listen below. Because how can you not love Bob Marley?
----So I'm going to add more below as the day goes on because they were answered so fast!----

MODEST MOUSE - float on
I have got to stop getting to these blogs later in the day, I would have totally known at least one of those. But I fight the urge to be that "first!" blogger. Also, doesn't anyone else have work?
Oh well, it was fun to test my song knowledge even with all the answers there.
#22. "For my fuse to dry", John Mayer's Bigger than my Body. Love him. :)
I'm really hoping that the place in my brain where all of these lyrics should be is busy processing vital information...something about the Celtic's shooting percentage or a sale on cute shoes at DSW, perhaps...

..."Just remember, baby"
Yay for me actually knowing one!

Damn I missed it. Have been missing in action for a while. So,
hello there, how are you doing. Let me dig into your archive and read all that I missed.
The mere fact that you have included "Let's Hear It For The Boy" among these songs makes you utterly cool in my book. I freaking love that song. :)
I did a post like this with movie quotes and ever since I've wanted to do songs. I think it'd be hard to guess!
