Last Night On The Bachelor (Alternatively Titled: Why The Hell Do I Still Watch Reality TV?)

No, that question wasn't rhetorical. I really have no idea.

  • First of all, what do the contestants do for a living? How can they put their jobs (and lives) on hold for weeks at a time? Sure I have some vacation time stored up, but not enough to sign up to be on The Bachelor. What do they do, take a leave of absence?
  • Some of the girls are 22. Twenty-two years old. Have they even had enough time to give dating a shot? Most likely they just graduated from college!
  • I know they want to make a good first impression, but toting your guitar or clarinet along for the ride is a tad over the top. Save that for date #2 maybe?
  • No matter how hot the guy is, or how laid back, sneaking your underwear in his pocket is not going to make him think highly of you. He might (and this is a big might) have sex with you, but he'll still think you're a skank. And for those of you who watched it last night, do you think those were the underwear she had on or she brought an extra pair just for that purpose?
  • There is always one girl who gets so shitfaced she falls asleep. I find this odd. You make the effort to sign up for the show, take the time off work, and then get drunk the first night?! Big surprise - the drunk girl this season was the same girl from above bullet. No, she didn't get a rose.
  • Does anyone else think it's strange that they couldn't find a suitable bachelor in our own country, so they got one from overseas? Apparently, he's here to "steal our women". What if the girl that "wins" doesn't want to pack up and move to London? Then what?
  • Yes, I will keep The Bachelor on my DVR rotation.
  • No, I still don't know why.

i pretty much have the same questions as you. and i really, really hope that was a clean pair of underwear she shoved in his pants. otherwise...ew...i don't know why i still watch this show either.

i really was a little godsmacked last night. and also, i feel like that was very likely the underwear she'd had on. but how surprised were you he picked the girl with the clarinet?

what i did like? the girl he gave the first impression rose to. she seemed normal - and quirky! we'll see how the season goes!

Reality contestants get paid bank to be on reality shows. BANK. That way they can afford to not work.

This is why I don't watch The Bachelor.

Now Rock of Love 2 is another story...

I totally agree regarding the guitar/clarinet bit. I was feeling embarassed for the girl with the clarinet.

I figure with the skanky girl, there's got to be at least one psycho out of the 25. So, if he gets rid of her early, that's great. All the better to avoid a storyline that revolves around one annoying girl. I think they were the underwear she was wearing. She's just dumb enough to take them off and give them to him.

I always wonder that about American Idol contestants. What's happening in their real lives while they are off living it up in Hollywood and being dragged to movie premieres to serve as advertising for Fox? Especially the ones with kids. And how do they keep their jobs? I guess the hope is they won't have to. Maybe Bachelor contestants are hoping to become trophy wives? I've never seen the show, so I don't really know.

I couldn't agree more! I still have a couple reality tv gilty pleasures like The Hills and Project Runway, but the Bachelor? I dont' get it either.

I stopped watching that show years ago for all the above-stated reasons. And for the fact that the couple rarely stays together once the show ends.

BTW, I wonder if there is a correlation between the girl who gets drunk with the 22-year-old-fresh-out-of-college?

I'm all for music education, and I admire accomplished musicians, but as a former clarinet player, I must say you can't find a much less sexy instrument. I was waiting for a dribble of spit to shoot out the bottom.

I miss the no-frills American bachelors. They're trying to get all fancy on us now and it just doesn't interest me. But I'll still watch if there's nothing better on.

I've wondered the same thing about how people can take off weeks at a time to go on a reality show. Our neighbors were actually finalists to go on The Amazing Race but had to back out due to work and family commitments.

I highly doubt any of those girls WENT to college and I doubt they have jobs either. I imagine them as the types of girls who live off of Mommy and Daddy until whenever. I just can't watch that show anymore. Rock of Love 2 however...

This is the dude w/the accent, right?

I might actually tune in for once.. haha. I love accents.

Last night while I was watching I asked myself why I was watching. I also asked myself where the heck do they get these girls!

I watched that where are they now bachelor special that was on last week. I used to watch it freshman year in college, when 22 seemed SO FAR AWAY. Of course by the time you're 22, you know what you want, you're ready to settle down, etc. Those women were wise! And mature!

Now? I think they're just on crack. I've also wondered the whole how do they afford to take off from life? I don't get it. I've contemplated applying to these shows just to see how far into the interview process I'd get, but then I laugh at myself.

damn. i forgot it was on last night. i had just been talking about it 2 hours earlier. there is always next week. i just hate shows that start at 10pm. i have an early bedtime :(

thanks for the recap.

I don't like him.

I'm glad the Chicago girl wasn't picked. What a tacky move sticking her panties in his pocket. He gives us Chicagoans a bad name.

I am so with you!

When the girl who was a lawyer?! started booty dancing in the middle of everyone I thought it can not get worse.

But then the girl pulled out her clarinet . . . and put it on the leash. . . and proceeded to play, and she got a rose?!

I was afraid. Then the skank with her nasty knickers. Who are these women?

Did you catch that the one woman, I think Chelsea, is a HOT DOG VENDOR!

Wow! We have reached a new low in reality TV. . . its like a bad accident, you can't turn your eyes away!

Every time I heard him speak on the commercials I started giggling, I don't think my boyfriend liked it.

I think Reality TV is really important to watch, it's educational like the animal discovery shows. Only instead of animals it's really stupid people.

I've always wondered the same thing about the jobs! Seriously!

If I turn on the TV, it's generally to watch a sporting event or the news. However, my new roomie is addicted to reality TV and she's gotten me slightly hooked. To the point where if she has it on, I'm tempted to watch rather than run away screaming. But I've found I really only have the desire to watch reality shows that revolve around talent, which narrows it down to Project Runway and any show that revolves around dance.

And Rock of Love. Damnit.

This post just reaffirmed my intense dislike of reality television. Thank you! :)

yeah, I watch that show too. I don't know why...train wreck that I just have to see, I guess.

I have never watched the Bachelor, for basically all the reasons you mentioned above, haha. But that doesn't mean I don't watch other crap dating shows and make fun of them the whole time :)

So sad, but I fell asleep during the first 15 minutes of The Bachelor. I'm sure that they will play a repeat, and I can catch up then.

This show is my absolute guilty pleasure. I love every ridiculous second.

And really? These women are gorgeous...you're telling me they have a problem finding dates? Or boyfriends?

The latest Bachelor is pretty good looking, too...it must be ALL about the money. Who needs love when you have (15 minutes of) fame and fortune?

So@24 said...

Of course these girls don't really want to settle down; they're 22! They just want the national attention!

huff, huff

It's like a train wreck...I cannot stop watching, no matter how hard I try. Such a guilty pleasure!

My favorite is when Chris halts everything to announce "Ladies...'Bachelor'...this is the final rose of the evening" Uh, thanks, douchebag, EVERYONE can see that!

Yeah, stuffing underwear in someone else's pocket doesn't exactly scream "good person to bring home to mom".
Ah dumb people..if it wasn't for them, there would be no reality TV.;)

What about the 33 year old whose occupation is "HOT DOG VENDOR????"

I am rooting for her!

Anonymous said...

Totally agree with you about the skanky girl who gave him her undies. I also think they were the ones she was wearing. Yuck! Who does that?

I have no idea why I watch it either. I also was ANTM, which is equally embarrassing.

East Coast Teacher said...

LOL, I thought I saw something about a hot dog vendor last night.

Yeah, she gets my vote, too ;)

elysa said...

you get to reciprocate the idol break up because I don't watch The Bachlor. I do wonder how all of the people who take off for any reality show support themselves.

Anonymous said...

Hehe. Reality TV show addicts crack me up. I watch some of them...just not very many. It's really much easier not to when you don't have TV. :-) (Seriously! I bet she brought 2 pairs of undies. She's a keeper, that one!)

The Bachelor was on as background while I was reading in my hotel the other night. I had the sound turned down, but I looked up periodically to see what was going on, and I wondered the exact same things as you (the first two). Also, WTF was up with there being a hot dog vendor? I mean, I know money/career isn't everything, but how much could she possibly have to contribute?

Although in reality, she probably banks more than I do!

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I always watch The Bachelor too. It's just really good bad tv.

You make me want to watch this show.

One of my guilty pleasures. What season is that already? They keep showing reruns here.
