Does Exchanging Recipes Officially Mean We're Old?

Ten years ago as a freshman in high school, I was lucky enough to meet some of the best friends I will ever have. And this weekend, I was lucky enough to get to spend time with all of them. And it was nothing less than fabulous.

Ironically as I exited the highway, on the last part of my hilly journey, I passed both a street and shopping plaza with the same name as my high school. Hours from my hometown, I had to smile at the coincidence.

Sure it was just a weekend trip, but it's such a rare occurrence when we are actually all able to get together that I was really looking forward to it. I was the first to arrive and tour the newly purchased home of my friend Lisa, where we all stayed. Gorgeously decorated to say the least. Wedding pictures on every wall. It was definitely a reminder that it's been a long time since pop quizzes and cafeteria lunches.

But no amount of time or maturity could keep us from getting together at the mall and doing some serious shopping. Isn't that what all high school friends do? After hours spent in and out of fitting rooms, IKEA and of course a few shoe stores we had had our fill. We were ready for a night out on the town, but who knew that after arriving back at the house and opening a few bottles of wine, there would be no interest in bar hopping after all.

Just six friends around a dining room table; sipping wine, going through old yearbooks, reading notes about boys, and best of all - laughing our asses off. Some of us hard enough to almost knock over the china cabinet.

Pizza and Superbad at one a.m. capped off the night (But only after a few calls to Lisa's hubby to figure out their entertainment center; I swear they have sixteen remotes!)

And if skipping a night out on the town isn't enough proof we're not in high school anymore, I think exchanging recipe and meal ideas over coffee the next morning definitely sealed the deal. As anxious as getting older normally makes me feel, this simple realization was actually reassuring. Knowing that our friendships change as we get older. And rather than grow apart, I hope we all grow closer as more time passes.

There was talk of a big move, career changes, family planning, doggie purchasing, and falling in love again. Seems we have a lot to look forward to. And I've seen some of these girls walk down the aisle already; I can't wait to be present when the others follow close behind.

Thanks for a wonderful weekend girls. Glad we decided to make this a tradition - here's to many more! Columbus next?

xoxo

I am so jealous, seems like you had a blast.

I think skipping a night on the town just means you have good quality friends and you don't need anything else to have fun.

I am 21 and I would choose spending a night in having good chats than going out the bars any day!

I'm glad you had an awesome weekend with your girls!

Sounds fabulous. Glad you had such a wonderful weekend!

It's so ironic you wrote about this, because I'm watching the last of my high school friendships wash away. And I wrote about another one just now. Strange.

I'm glad you had a wonderful weekend, and I'm so glad you have that bond.

Wow, what a fabulous weekend! Trading recipes doesn't make us old, it makes us well versed in our own kitchens!

Oh that sounds like so much fun! Wow I wish I had friends like that. Unfortch it was hard to keep in touch when I left for college in Ohio and my parents moved away from our hometown my freshman year. Le sigh.

I will always take a bottle of wine with good friends over the club scene and the whole general annoyance. yay!

That sounds like a FABULOUS reunion! Be glad you're still in touch with your high school friends! For me, going to college far from home and then relocating to a city even farther means I've lost touch with most of my high school friends. Though, I'm looking forward to seeing two of my closest girlfriends next week when we return to Boston for the weekend!

It is nice that our friendships can grow up with us, isn't it?

Next it will be potty training tips...

Aw that sound great. I've always been a bit sad that high school friends lost touch. But I have other amazing friends to reminisce with.

That sounds really, really fun! Who cares if you're exchanging recipes rather than tales of drunken nights of first kisses. It's so great that you have such a close circle of girlfriends.

Aw - what a nice post! I love those sorts of evenings.

I can tell that some people hate it when some of my hs friends and I reminisce (if they didn't know us way back when) but its always hysterical to reflect on how SERIOUS (oh the drama!) high school was to us, all the crazy fun we had... and the insane amount of things we were able to get away with!

That is so fun! I need one of those with a bunch of old friends, too. It seems like my wedding will be the first time we all get together since college.

"10 years ago as a freshman in high school". Ha. I am one year shy of being able to say "20 years ago as a freshman in high school." But you know what? That doesn't even make me feel old. :)

Holy crap that post made me feel kind of old. It's been 20 years I think since I was a freshman in high school.

Sounds like a good time was had by all, and I need to figure out a way to do the same thing with my friends that I have slowly tracked down through myspace.

Haha, I felt really old when I was in the neighborhood of my college and realized every bar I went to as a underage freshman had closed. Also, trading recipes makes you awesome, not old.

this sounds lke what happens when i get together with my high school friends. we generally prefer to stay in and drink wine and just laugh at old stories of our crazy times.

i am lucky to live with 2 of these friends and seriously, it's the same with us even though we see each other all the time.

I'm so jealous of your get together! I don't have friends like that. Not anymore anyway. It's sad.

No way! I love to cook, and getting a good recipe is the best thing ever. Don't think of it as getting older, call it maturing.

Aw that's so sweet. I wish I had friends that have lasted that long! You're a very lucky girl!

And I do hope that if you try out any of those recipes, you'll share some good ones with us. :-)

Awww that's the best. My high school friends are still my best friends. A bunch of us made dinner together on Sat. and were planning on heading out the the bars after. But all the sudden it was midnight and we were still sitting on the couches talking. And it was sooo much better than going out!

I used to stuff that felt "older" but when fun instances like this come up, it makes you feel alot better about it because the people you grew up with? They're getting older too. 20something girls are like a fine wine :)

I am such a huge fan of friendly get-togethers it's not even funny.

I'm glad you had a great time!

Sounds like you have a fabulous weekend!

I find myself exchanging recipes with increasing frequency. And skipping nights out on the town? Sign me up for the wine at home!

Ow wow, i just felt old simply in realizing that I am older than you because I would have been a freshman 12 years ago and that is obviously much longer than ten. yeesh.

Anyway, I think it's so awesome that you guys have get togethers! How fun!

it depends what the recipes are for. martinis? no. tuna noodle casseroles? yes.

There are few things in life better than a weekend bonding with your best girls! I'm so glad you have fun, and if you got any really great recipes, you should totally share them ;)

That sounds like my ideal weekend with the girls. Doesn't mean you are getting old just mature! Enjoy it!

Don't worry, that sounds like my kind of weekend too! I actually quite prefer staying in with friends to bar hopping with friends, especially in the bitter cold of February!

Soon you'll be discussing what brands of breast pumps the best :-p

We're old now :-(

I love the way you put this, I love knowing that my friendships will change also and not necessarily grow apart. That's probably one of the best feelings in the world.

Glad you had such a great weekend! Those kind really are the best :)

sounds like a fantastic weekend...so glad you had fun! and no, exchanging recipes doesn't mean we're getting old. it just means we've all learned to cook. =)

It's so great that you keep in touch through the years. I know I've lost a lot of my friends due to growing pains and I wish I could tell them that despite the time passing, I would still pick up where we left off.

Sounds like you had a great weekend. When my best friend came out we sat around watching Harry Potter drinking gin & tonics and exchanging recipes. Apparently, that is just what happens. I love how you put it.

That sounds like so much fun. Unfortunately, I don't keep in touch with anyone from high school, but hubs does, so I guess it works out :) It sure does sound like fun!

YAY! I'm so glad you got to go see your old highschool friends. That is such a rejuvenating experience! And if trading recipes and skipping nights out on the town makes you old...then I am old too. I just can't go out as often anymore. And I get hungry for new things.

that is AWESOME. and it'll so amazing to keep the tradition going, well into the families and kids stage of it all!

What a fun time! That makes me want to have an old fashioned slumber party with the girls.

I was expecting this to be another recipe post ala tatertot casserole. but stories of high school friends are fantabulous. I love girl's weekend. Me and my girls have had to reschedule 3 times and still haven't gotten a new date set. Yay for fun times with fun people.
