Curiosity [Nearly] Killed The Cat

Who knew there was truth to the saying? I mean, it's not that I thought it was completely unfounded. But would a cat really go as far as to do something that could kill it?

The answer to that is yes. And my cat, Holly, is lucky she has 9 lives. I'm sure that she's been spared on many other occasions (usually because I can't catch her!), but last night she was really lucky.

I came upstairs and found that she had dug through my purse, retrieved a Claritin-D (allergy pill), poked through the silver backing, GOT THE PILL OUT, and proceeded to lick it until all the wording on the pill was gone. I guess it left a bad taste in her mouth because the pill was still intact when I found it. Who knows if consuming the pill would have actually killed her, but this proves she has no fear.

Screw childproof, I need CATproof.

Maybe she was feeling a bit congested? Poor kitty, hope she is doing well.

i think my damn cat has used about 3 of her lives already. speaking from experience, don't let a friend do laundry at your place, spill detergent on your carpet, say she cleaned it up, then your cat apparently licks it and gets deathly ill to the point where you have to force feed her liquids with a syringe. one life gone right there.

Hahaha oh my god why would your cat want to do that? Claritin tastes awful!!!

That's so scary! Poor cat. I'm glad she's okay.

It never ceases to amaze me what animals think taste good. Like when they eat their own, you know. Ew.

Since she's doing OK, I can make a joke, right? Apparently her allergies are acting up...Since you haven't done anything about it, she had to take matters into her own hands. ;)

A cat I had many years ago once ate through tinfoil to get to some banana bread. Ouch. But my banana bread is apparently THAT good.

Ha, if you find how to make something "cat-proof" you let me know!

Cats are ridiculously determined aren't they? I'm glad that she's ok!

I'm glad she is doing okay! I would have been so scared!

Poor kitty! I'm glad that Holly is okay. Animals are curious creatures. I leave all that stuff locked up. I even keep my purse in my closet on the top shelf to keep prying cat and dog mouths and paws out of things that could hurt them. I'm glad she's alright though!

At least she won't have hayfever! :)

HOLLY!! UGH. kitties are bad. ours kept us up all night... so hyper.

Maybe Holly had really bad allergies, and was desperation.

Glad she's okay! Scary.

Glad she's ok! My cat digs through my purse to find my cell phone to pull it out and chew on it. Lovely, really.

Can you bring her to Boston? I can never get those little capsules out, and my dog is no help...

Seriously, though...I'm glad to hear she's okay!

Oh man, I hear you. I don't know if dogs get nine lives or not, but if so, between the two of mine they must have used up about five! Glad Holly is okay :)

Seriously, all cats are lucky they have 9 lives b/c as cuddly and as cute as they may be, they are all dumbasses!

Maybe she has developed an allergy to fur.

Poor Holly!

Maybe kitty was feeling kind of allergic?

blech that must have tasted nasty! pills always get this weird taste if they're in your mouth for too long!

Wow I can't believe your cat managed to open it, that's crazy.

And good thing she's okay.

My dog use to tear open pop cans to lick out the last drop. We only seen him do it once, after discovering several ripped open cans after different cook outs. We were extra careful to pick up all cans so he couldn't get any when we realized what he was doing. He never got cut, though.

BTW, the entire saying goes:
'Curiosity killed the cat; satisfaction brought him back'

crazy ass cat. glad she's ok!

my cats do weird stuff like that too. for some reason they like to eat plastic grocery bags.

it's bizarre.

my dog rocco once ate "Gas-Aids" tablets in my apartment. I didn't know what was worse, worrying about my dogs health- or admitting to my boyfriend that I had "Gas-Aid" in my apartment. (the dog was fine, but i couldn't say the same about my ego)

oh poor kitty. my cat likes to play with pills any chance he can get, though he has never opened the package. they can be a little worrisome sometimes.

Princess Pointful said...

Wow. That is one determined cat. I am in awe!

My dad left a box of steroids out in the living room (for ear infections), and his two Shih Tzus tore through the box and ate the whole pack of pills. They had to have their stomachs pumped. They're okay, but totally scary.

oh my god.

Oh my gosh, I saw a dead cat in the road yesterday. It was so, so sad. If there hadn't been so many cars around, I would have pulled over and found its house. That, and I started crying, so I would have just looked like a totally loon running around the street trying to pick up the poor dead cat.

I'm glad to hear yours is okay!!

I must have the laziest cat ever. Beatrice won't even go in the bathroom. She's afraid of the toilet. All my cat does is lay in one of 3 spots. Glad Holly the cat is ok!

Andrea said...

Oh wow, she reall wanted that pill.

Oh my gosh! I soo feel you on this one! My cat? Loves things that will kill him. You know..electrical outlets when it's storming (that I just got shocked by), or mop water with lots of tasty chemicals in it.

Yeah. I don't suspect he'll live much longer. I think he's gone through like 20 lives already. Hehe. Aren't cats great!?

Vanessa said...

That is one lucky kitty! And catproof? I think DOG proof needs to go along with that!

Ashley said...

WOW, lucky cat!

My house is definitely dog proofed, I have one that will eat ANYTHING...it is crazy!

I am glad she is ok! :)

Does your cat have opposable thumbs too?

;-)

Aw poor kitty! But at least she stopped when she did. Luckily, Kodiak could care less about my purse unless it has cookies in it!

Bhanu said...

WOW...didn't realize cats were that capable?

Le Petit Chic said...

Ohh, I went through this same thing a few weeks ago with my chihuahua, except it was an Advil. She punctured the capsule, but must not have liked the taste because the liquid was all over the carpet. Whew...thank god! Glad your cat is okay!

The Underpaid Princess said...

My dog did the same with Advil once. She scared me half to death! She also ate a bunch of chocolate fudge once, with no ill effects other than me freaking out.

Mike said...

Get a dog. He'll keep the cat too busy to get into trouble.

You will have some DIFFERENT trouble though.

Charm City Kim said...

At least she didn't eat it! :-)

I always worry that my dogs will get into something because they don't seem to have a filter at all in terms of what to eat/what not to eat.

Anonymous said...

Holy crap. Cats will do about anything.

Katie said...

Haha that's crazy! Cats will try anything once, but I'm not surprised she left the pill - it probably didn't taste like tuna after all!
